It basically means you have pretty much a safe bet on succession. It's like elective monarchy except significantly better, and elective monarchy is my second favorite succession after ultimogeniture. The main downside is like you said, that the titles can get elected to different people, but this isn't as common a problem as it might seem.

In Elective, if you don't suck, and your chosen successor doesn't suck, it's usually a done deal your voters will vote with you and install your successor. In Tanistry, your voters look at your chosen successor, blink, say, "that's nice", and then vote for your imbecile Uncle Fred, and there's nothing you can do about it. Tanistry is best for keeping your realm in one piece, it just means you may have to assassinate kin members who are more popular than your preferred heir. If you want to get to feudal quickly focus on upgrading tribal authority to max quickly (no negative effect because your not a pagan), and build up your hill fort to max (raiding is the best way to make money quickly).
Tanistry is, in my opinion, the worst of the special election types (well, I haven't tried Feudal Elective), but it can have it uses, if you want to play it right.
